Module
Aim(s): |
The
module aims at providing students with
introductory knowledge and concepts in heating,
ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) as part
of the contemporary building systems. The basic
concepts of thermal comfort, heat balance and
heat transfer and how they apply to building
design will be discussed. The basic
concepts in thermodynamics and how they apply to
various processes in air conditioning and air
cycles will be examined. Attentions will
be given to the selection of appropriate air
conditioning and refrigeration systems for
contemporary buildings with particular
considerations given to various aspects, such as
occupational health, energy efficiency and
environmental protection. In addition, the
basic principle of prediction and evaluation of
sound and noise generated by various HVAC
components commonly encountered in tall building
setups, in particular, the ventilation
components, and how these facilities interact
with the building services components, will be
discussed.
|
Objectives: |
On
completion of this Module, students are expected
to be able to:
1. apply the thermal comfort, heat balance and
transfer concepts in loading estimation;
2. analyse the basic air conditioning processes
and cycles and their application in simple air
conditioning systems using the basic concepts of
thermodynamics;
3. select the appropriate air conditioning and
refrigeration system components in practical
applications with consideration of various
aspects such as health, energy and environment;
and
4. apply the basic principles of sound in
carrying out ventilation noise analysis and
prediction.
