The Kansai Electric Company's Nanko Power Station aim at not only a thermal power station but creating an environment where people can enjoy a close relationship with the nature. The beautifully illuminated "Sky Tower" stack has become a new symbol of Osaka's Nanko area. Spacious landscaped enclave have been preserved within the power station grounds, and an area called "El City Nanko" has been provided for the enjoyment of Osaka residents and visitors. Creating a new and promising future for the waterfront, the Nanko Power Station is dedicated to protecting and preserving the surrounding scenic natural environment.

Solar Panels:
The solar panels installed here is in small scale for research and for illumination of the smokestack only. Performance of the solar panels are recorded everyday to compare the output in different weather conditions.

The Illuminated Stack
The smokestack (Nanko Skytower) is a symbol of Osaka's water front, and as such it is ulluminated in different colors according to the season. A solar power system supplies the energy for the illumination.

  Other Environmental friendly measures
Natural gas is the fuel for NANKO Power plant. Different measures has been used in environmental protection, mainly to reduce and remove nitrogen oxides generated by the combustion of natural gas inside the boilers.

1. Smokestack (Nanko Sky Tower)
It rises 200m with three inner cylinders. Smoke is expelled from the smokestack nozzle at a rate of up to 35m per second, enabling it to diffuse rapidly and completely into the air.

2. Exhaust Gas denitrizer
Utilizes the reaction with a catalyst and ammonia to break down the nitrogen oxides (NOx) generated in the combustion process into nitrogen and water. Remocal efficiency is 80% or greater.

3. Soundproof walls
Soundproof constructions are used for the walls enclosing such equipment as the boilers, turbines, generators, transformers, and forced draft fans, suppressing the transmission of noise generated by these equipments.

4. Wastewater treatment system
Wastewater is treated and thoroughly purified before being discharged into the Osaka municipal sewer system.

5. Exhaust gas decarbonization test facility
This is a pilot plant for the removal of carbon dioxide, which is believed to be one of the major causes of global warming, from exhaust gas. Research is currently under way for practical application in the future.
