Description: This course covers important design concepts, principles and engineering calculations of the utility services systems that are essential to proper operation of buildings and facilities. The utility services systems include plumbing installation, cold and hot water supply, sanitation and drainage, steam systems, fuel gas supply, telecommunication services, extra low voltage systems, and vertical transportation.
Assessment Methods: Examination (60%), Continuous Assessment (40%)

Educational Objectives:

  • To introduce the important design concepts, principles and engineering calculations of utility services systems
  • To enable students to appreciate the design practice and proper operation of different types of utility services systems including plumbing installation, cold and hot water supply, sanitation and drainage, steam systems, fuel gas supply, telecommunication services, extra low voltage systems, and vertical transportation

  • To explain the important design concepts, principles and engineering calculations of utility services systems
  • To evaluate the design practice and operation of different types of utility services systems
  • To develop practical design skills for plumbing installation, cold and hot water supply, sanitation and drainage
  • To apply the design practice for steam systems and fuel gas supply
  • To assess the telecommunication services and extra low voltage systems in buildings
  • To appraise the design and operation of vertical transportation systems
