    QF Level: 4
    Credit Points: 3
    Year: 1
    Pre-requisite: Nil
    Co-requisite: Nil
    Module Aim(s): The module aims to equip students with a clear understanding of the fundamental concepts, skills, and techniques in basic calculus, to provide them with the analytical tools to solve engineering problems and as a foundation for progression to higher level studies in mathematics and science subjects.
    Objectives: On completion of this Module, students are expected to be able to:
    1. evaluate derivatives from definitions and by using the rules of differentiation;
    2. apply partial differentiation to determine the gradient vector, and directional derivative of a multiple-variable function;
    3. use derivatives in general engineering analysis, such as to establish linear approximations and Taylor’s expansion near a point, estimate changes, assist in curve sketching and solve nonlinear equations and optimization problems;
    4. evaluate analytical solutions to indefinite integrals and definite integrals, and numerical solutions to definite integrals with the associated error analysis;
    5. apply integration to compute physical quantities for engineering analysis, including arc lengths, areas of bounded regions and revolution surfaces and the volumes of solids; and
    6. derive and solve mathematical formulation of common science and engineering problems.
