    QF Level: 5
    QF Credit: 12
    Pre-requisite: Nil
    Co-requisite: Nil
    Module Aim(s): The module aims to familiarize students with the concepts and modelling techniques of differential equations that are used extensively in building services engineering analyses, such as heat transfer, fluid flow in open and close conducts, indoor ventilation, typical classical heat/mass transfer problems, seepage problems, steadystate fluid flow problems and others. It also aims to develop analytical solution techniques and a working knowledge of numerical tools to solve the engineering applications modelled in differential equations.
    Objectives: On completion of this Module, students are expected to be able to:
    1. model and solve the governing ordinary or partial differential equations of simple engineering systems;
    2. solve manually first order linear ODEs and constant coefficient second order linear ODEs;
    3. analyse the steady or transient state of an engineering system by solving the appropriate boundary value problem or initial value problem;
    4. solve the governing differential equations of engineering problems by means of, where appropriate, Laplace transform, Fourier series, and/or finite differences; and
    5. implement a suitable computer algebra system to solve engineering problems expressed in (systems of) differential equations.
    Assessment Methods: • Coursework (60%) -- Test, Assignment, Practice Exercise
    • Examination (40%)
