    QF Level: 5
    QF Credit: 12 (one module)
    Pre-requisite: Nil
    Co-requisite: Nil
    Module Aim(s): This module aims at providing students with practical and functional knowledge for planning and design of cold/hot water supply systems and sanitation/drainage systems for contemporary buildings typically found in Hong Kong. Students will develop practical skills for the planning, design and applications on the piping systems, equipment selection, installation, and operation for and compliance with the relevant Ordinances, Regulations, Code of Practice and Standards in Hong Kong. In additional, the planning and design of fire safety equipment, such as fire hydrant, hose reel systems, and automatic fire sprinkler systems, will be discussed in compliance with the relevant Ordinances, Regulations, Code of Practice and Standards in Hong Kong in order to maintain the public and occupancy safety.
    Objectives: On completion of this Module, students are expected to be able to:
    1. design cold/hot water supply systems with the associated fuel supply and gas supply systems by applying the knowledge on the piping design, equipment selection, installation, and operation in compliance with the relevant Ordinances, Regulations, Code of Practice and Standards in Hong Kong to maintain health, safety, energy conservation and environmental protection;
    2. design sanitation and drainage systems by applying the knowledge of system hydraulic, fluid flow and practice, system integration from water closet to building last manhole to city drainage system;
    3. plan fire hydrant and hose reel systems by applying the knowledge on the piping design, system integration from hydrant and hose reel systems to stand pipes pressure regulations, valve and tanks, and fire services inlets;
    4. develop automatic fire sprinkler systems; which include, foam, gaseous, drencher and water-spray fire extinguishing systems; by applying the knowledge on the piping design for different architectural layout and ceiling details, to the interpretation of codes and regulations for sprinkler head layout; and
    5. evaluate and develop fire detection and alarm, smoke extraction and staircase pressurization systems for fire services systems by applying the knowledge on the system design, operation and maintenance on the integrated system function from fire, heat and smoke detection to avoid false alarm.
    Assessment Methods: • Assignment (20%)
    • Mini Project (40%)
    • Examination (40%)
