Caisson foundation is used for main building. R.C. decking for the pedestrian entrance from the Bonham Road and the bridge to Fung Ping Shan Museum. Spread footings are used for the independent R.C. decking adjacent to Bonham Road with allowable soil bearing capacity of 100 kPa based on the site investigation and triaxial compression test results on the soil asmple taken from the trial pit. Single and combned caisson caps are proposed in this submission.
The construction of the caisson foundation usually produce less noise than the other types of foundation system. It is qite appropriate for this project since the site is inside the campus of the University. It can minimize the distrubance to the students nearby.
Although the groud water levels observed in the site investigation reported is below the bottom of the proposed screen wall, the earth retaining structures are still designed for a water level of 1/3 of the retaining height. Also the structural elements of ground floor and part of the first floor which is in direct contact with earth are designed for liquid-retaining structures and resisted uplift forces.
In the period of construction, there will also many changes on the details of the structure. These changes are mainly due to some in-situ conditions. Therefore the structural engineer has to follow the project until the builiding has been completely built. Also, during the design process, some of the regulations has to be followed and as a guide for the design.
Here are the Code of Practice for design :--
