The new building of the IBN-DLO, the Institute for Forestry and Nature Research, sets a new standard in people-friendly and environmental-friendly building. It is not so much the degree of eco-friendliness that sets it apart - the building does not attempt to break any records in the sustainable use of energy and water or in the recycling potential of its building materials - but in the originality with which the design expresses of the principles of sustainable architecture in a tangible form. The building, designed by architect Stefan Behnisch, 'behaves' some what like a living organism, with a self-regulating capacity for its temperature and water use, a capacity which responds to the cycles of summer and winter, day and night, heat and cold, rain and drought. The form and coloration of the building testify to a deliberate aesthetic imperfection. People generally find aesthetically ' perfect' buildings overawing, in Behnish's opinion. His non-design architecture is gauged to put he building's users at their ease.
