Preserve and reuse the heritage

The museum of coastal defence reuses the 19th century heritage which avoids total demolition of the building. Nearly no major demolition was necessary. This minimized demolition waste which will add pressure to the landfills while this significant heritage can be preserved. The museum of coastal defence is one of the worlds' largest fort restoration projects.

Renovate the existing old redoubt

By renew and adding new features to the old redoubt, the heritage become modernized and served a new function as a museum. The courtyard and chambers are used as exhibition rooms under the tension structure. The structure also contains a network of underground casemates with tunnels and passages which were originally used as quarters, kitchen and ammunition store for the soldiers. They are now converted into theatre, exhibition rooms and office. This practice is sustainable as features of old heritage is transformed with contemporary needs.

Reuse of bricks

There is a battery brick wall with bullet holes in the crumbling brick wall where is believed for having executions in the past. Bricks from Sai Ying Pun mental hospital, another 19th century structure, were reused to repair the battery brick.
