The Integer concept began in the UK, where Nick Thompson, principal of architects Cole Thomson Associates and Alan Kell of I & I Ltd started investigating ways of building better homes. Both part of the European Intelligent Building Group, the pair saw the two different strands of intelligent buildings and green buildings as being quite devergent. A connection between the two was evident, they noted, and Integer, a word formed from "intelligent" and "green" was born.
